Theramers® for Chronic Wound Healing

The chronic wound healing puzzle.

There are a number of unmet needs in chronic wound healing. High levels of destructive enzymes (MMPs), poor blood supply, infection and pain are all pieces of the chronic wound healing puzzle.

Each year, millions of chronic wounds require the constant care of physicians, health care providers and family members. These chronic wounds can take months, and often years, to heal. Chronic wound care represents a $3 billion market that is growing at 20% per year.

Rimon Therapeutics has developed a number of Theramers® to treat difficult-to-heal chronic wounds, including bedsores, and venous and diabetic ulcers. The typical treatment for chronic wounds is passive dressings. Rimon’s Angiogenic, MI and AM Theramers® are the basis of a potential “toolkit” of “active” wound care products that are simple, easy to use and cost competitive.

MI-Sorb® Dressing Designed to "Kick-Start" the Healing of Chronic Wounds

MI-Sorb™ Dressing

MI-Sorb® is a new therapy designed to support the body's healing process by lowering the activity of matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) in the wound environment. MMPs are tissue-degrading enzymes that are present in abnormally high levels in recalcitrant wounds (that are clinically healable). MI-Sorb® selectively binds active MMPs, and hence reduces their levels in the wound environment.

MI-Sorb® is composed of Rimon Therapeutic's proprietary MI Theramer® microspheres, sandwiched between two layers of non-adherent nylon mesh. The wound contacting nylon layer enables easy and comfortable removal of the dressing, while permitting the transfer of wound fluid to the absorptive, MMP-inhibiting core of the dressing. A course of treatment with MI-Sorb® therapy puts recalcitrant wounds on a healing pathway, making them responsive to conventional wound care.

Key Features

  • Clinically shown to lower tissue-destroying MMP activity in wounds
  • Unique and proprietary mechanism of action that compares favourably against competitor dressings
  • Localized MMP inhibition using a synthetic therapeutic polymer that has been designated by the USFDA as a device
  • Easy to apply and remove and comfortable for the patient
  • Compatible with various secondary dressings, including silver dressings

MI-Sorb® has been clinically tested for the treatment of a variety of chronic wound types1

A randomized, controlled trial performed by Dr. Gary Sibbald showed that broad spectrum MMP activity was reduced in recalcitrant wounds treated with the MI-Sorb® Dressing for 4 weeks compared to control standard of care. In addition, reductions in wound fluid MMP activity correlated with improved wound bed visual and histological appearance (presence of new granulation tissue and reduced inflammatory infiltrate), indicating transition to a healing pathway.

Rimon Therapeutics is currently developing an ISO 13485 certified manufacturing process with the aim of launching MI-Sorb® into the marketplace in late 2008.

MI-Sorb® therapy utilizes proprietary and clinically proven technology to move recalcitrant wounds to a healing pathway. MI-Sorb® is "best in class" for addressing the abnormally high levels of MMPs in chronic wounds.
